Monthly Car Rental in San Diego: How It Works & What to Expect

Smiling customer holding the keys to her monthly rental car in San Diego

Need a car in San Diego for more than a few weeks, but don’t want to buy, finance, or sign a multi-year lease? A monthly car rental is often the simplest answer. You get a reliable vehicle for as long as you need it, one predictable payment, and none of the long-term strings.

This guide walks through how monthly car rental works at Renty Car Rental, what it costs, what you need to bring, and a few details worth knowing before you book.

Who Rents a Car by the Month?

Monthly rentals fit a surprising number of situations. Our customers include:

  • People between cars – waiting on a new car to arrive, saving up to buy, or deciding what to get next.
  • Newcomers to San Diego – relocating for work or school and needing wheels before settling in.
  • Travel nurses, contractors, and temporary workers – on assignments that last a few months.
  • Long-stay visitors – snowbirds, family visits, and extended vacations.
  • Businesses – providing vehicles for employees without adding to a company fleet.
  • Drivers whose own car is off the road – for a long repair or after an accident.

If you’ll need a car for four weeks or more, renting by the month almost always beats paying daily or weekly rates.

How Monthly Car Rental Works

The process is straightforward:

  1. Choose your dates and vehicle. Use the search on our homepage or browse the fleet, from fuel-efficient compacts to premium and full-size cars.
  2. Pick your coverage. Choose basic or full coverage during booking, depending on what you need.
  3. Pick up the car – or have it brought to you. Pick up at our Clairemont office, or ask about free delivery and pick-up at your home, business, or the airport. Free delivery is available for rentals of 3 months or longer within 10 miles (one way) of our office.
  4. Drive. Use the car for your full rental period. Need more time? Call us to extend.
  5. Return it. Bring it back (or arrange a drop-off) when you’re done.

A “month” is 28 days

One detail to know up front: monthly contracts at Renty are calculated on a 28-day basis (four 7-day weeks). Mark your return date on your calendar. Vehicles returned more than 29 minutes past the due time are charged an hourly late fee, and after two hours the next full day is billed.

How Much Does a Monthly Car Rental Cost in San Diego?

At Renty, long-term rentals typically range from about $425 to $1,000+ per month, depending on the vehicle class, rental length, and coverage you choose.

For comparison, our daily rentals run roughly $29 to $45 per day and weekly rentals $153 to $244 per week. Stretch daily or weekly pricing over a full month and it adds up quickly, which is why monthly plans are the better value for longer stays.

Things that can affect your total:

  • Vehicle class – compacts cost less than premium and full-size cars.
  • Coverage – basic vs. full coverage.
  • Additional drivers – $25 per additional driver.
  • Mileage – each plan includes a mileage allowance (see below).

What You Need to Rent

  • A valid driver’s license. Any U.S. state license is accepted, and so are foreign and international licenses, as long as they’re valid.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • A credit card. Major credit cards are accepted. Paying with a debit card is possible with a one-time, non-refundable $12 background check fee.

Good news for younger drivers: Renty doesn’t charge underage fees for drivers under 25, a surcharge many larger rental companies add on top of their rates.

Mileage on a Monthly Rental

Every rental includes a mileage allowance. Under our standard terms that’s 125 miles per day, with a per-mile charge beyond that. We also offer mileage plans that can be adjusted to how you drive. If you have a long daily commute or a road trip planned, tell us when you book so we can set you up with the right plan and you won’t face surprise charges.

Maintenance and Repairs

One of the biggest perks of renting instead of owning: you’re not paying for upkeep. Routine maintenance and repairs are handled by Renty. On a longer rental, we may ask you to bring the car in for scheduled maintenance. Just stop by when we reach out, and we’ll take care of it. If something goes wrong with the car, call us and we’ll get it sorted.

Tips for Getting the Best Monthly Rate

  • Book early. Availability tightens during busy seasons, especially summer.
  • Choose the smallest car that fits your needs. A compact is usually the most affordable option for commuting.
  • Be realistic about mileage. Picking the right plan up front costs less than paying overage later.
  • Ask about current promotions. Renty regularly runs specials on longer rentals.
